I think the problem with 8472 (or the Undine, for you STO players out there) was that they have a hook for a unique threat to the Trek universe, what with being wholly nonhumanoid and relying on elaborately evolved organisms instead of technology, but the people at Voyager couldn't bring anything new to the table with

There does seem to be some tight body armor, but those hydraulics (pneumatics? I dunno) on his joints are massively vulnerable to just about everything.
