Why can’t Apple say “OK, we will crack it for you. Bring us the phone. Go away. We will call you when it is open.” That way, the FBI gets the data, Apple keeps the technique safe, everyone is happy.

I am just as likely to believe that Apple is lying, as the FBI (or any Gov. agency for that matter). I firmly believe that yes, Apple does have the ability to by-pass the locks. But, no, there is now way that they would admit this.
