I’m so sorry you had that experience. I definitely don’t envy the position many women are put into in and out of the gym. I hope you found a program that you can do outside of a gym. If you haven’t, it sounds like you were doing some interval training, so maybe a boot camp would be up your alley.

There’re a few photos floating around the internet of signs in gyms that say “If you’re too weak to re-rack your weights, please come to the front desk and one of the girls will do it for you,” and “if you’re strong enough to lift it, you’re strong enough to put it away.” Sexism aside, I bet they’re effective.

I’ve belonged to both and could not disagree more. While the environment at a local gym (and this goes for CF as well) may appear more social and inviting, they tend to be super cliquey because the gym is a social environment so people establish gym friendships and groups.

This morning I saw a girl and a guy I’d never seen before doing bench presses and if my gym had a bookie I’d have bet my house that they weren’t going to re-rack. Not only did they leave her 10 and 5 lb plates on the bar, they left his 45s and 25s on the floor leaning against the bench.

I’m sorry you went through that. That sounds like a toxic culture created among the employees, but I’d be shocked if it carried over to the members. That said, there will always be assholes.

To anyone self-conscious about their body, please know that nobody in the gym is judging you for how you look or how much weight you’re moving. 400 lbs and doing 5 lb curls? Nobody will bat an eye.
