I chalk it up to the misguided attempt at preventing hacking/homebrewing/pirating. I still find it plausible. If humans can break bricks with their hands and wood with the heads, a low quality TFT and some ABS is well within the realm of ‘head smash-able’. Newer LED backlit panels aren’t glass in their core like they used to be, so really it’s just several layers of hard plastic.
