WOW. “They weren’t used to it”??? Because women are used to being raped?
WOW. “They weren’t used to it”??? Because women are used to being raped?
Penn State has had a serious and unacknowledged rape culture for a long time, so yes, the gender of the victims definitely had something to do with its infamy. But I suspect the main reason the scandal blew up was that it embroiled Joe Paterno, who was God to most PSU alumni and a household name nationally. I was…
Likely a combination of all of the above. It seems more horrifying than the Penn State/Sandusky scandal because of how long he was getting away with it.
I was a good doctor because my treatments worked, and those patients that are now speaking out were the same ones that praised and came back over and over, and referred family and friends to see me. The media convinced them that everything I did was wrong and bad. They feel I broke their trust.
why this isn’t getting more attention?
I’m sorry you have a dislike for the mean words. But yeah, It’s you.
I really don’t understand how this could be someone’s take away from this whole ordeal.
She’s pointing out that what he did to them would be cruel and unusual punishment so she couldn’t sentence him to that.
I have a friend that is very involved in a non-profit in Lansing that helps kids that have been sexually abused. She told me that MSU has a long standing history of sweeping assault under the rug and not standing up for victims. It is extremely disappointing, but also not surprising. I hope that all of this has them…
He tried to get out of listening to the testimonies by saying it would be detrimental to his mental health. After that? No mercy.
It *was* jarring. I think for a lot of us it was cathartic as well. The things this man did, the persons of authority who allowed it, the sheer volume of it all... We are not so far removed from our ancestors who murdered and enslaved our way across the hemisphere, and treating him to this language *feels* right…
When I first saw her I thought ‘Dang that’s a lot of blush,’ but on further review I believe that’s just her temper barely checked.
I totally agree, there needs to be a lot of time and resources devoted to just that. Families are already pulling their kids out of gymnastics because of this bastard. Even the Olympian Shawn Johnson said she would never put her own daughter into gymnastics with everything coming to light right now. That says a lot…
It seems like there should be some way to support gymnastics without supporting abuse. It would be a tragedy for the women in training to lose their dreams because of Nasser.
I get what you’re saying, but I don’t think she acted inappropriately. Keep in mind she had to listen to every single victim impact statement, which must have been quite difficult.
I didn’t see either sentiment in what I watched of her statement. She said “I just signed your death warrant” in specific reference to the length of the sentence she imposed, making it clear she wanted him to live out his natural life where he couldn’t hurt anyone else for the sake of the survivors, and so any future…
People in positions of power like this need to understand that if abuse has occurred but you were not aware of it, it just means that you have not created an environment where people can safely come forward and report. Your ignorance is as much an indictment as if you knew and did nothing.
On the one hand, judges in high profile cases do like to grandstand. Everyone deserves level justice without a show of morality from the system that has power over you.
As a Lansing resident, and former Spartan, I think it is well past time for her to go. The entire Board of Directors of MSU and anyone at the university who ignored or covered up Nassar’s crimes should also go. Ideally, I’d like to see some charges filed against them. I do NOT believe for one minute that she knew…
