I’m not convinced that this setup is ideal of dedicated offroading (reliability concerns when you are very far from rescue) but it does seem ideal for lighter duty. Curiously it appears that an electric motor is more expensive than a differential. I expect that to change.

Why would you extend the body paneling into the front bumper over the front wheels? That the first part that is going to get damaged offroading. The FJ designers realized that and made the equivalent part cheap and easily replaceable.

So the idea of making parts of cars removable and serve some other purpose is really stupid, and luckily rarely makes it to production.
