I thought this was pretty terrible tbh. The characters were shallow and unlikable. The plot lacked focus. The moralism was heavy handed.

You gave up too quickly. The MC is probably the most advanced bit of genetic engineering on Sidonia. Only a few people know it though. Thats why the Captain pretty much adopts him immediately on sight.
