I think it's more like exposing him to older games instead of newer ones. I can see this working pretty well as games lived or die on gameplay instead of graphic which can make the kid more knowledgeable about what kind of game he would like.

It sounds worse when you say he used his son as an experiment. I don't see this as any different from parents that show kids older movies that they grew up with before watching the latest blockbuster. Hell, that's how I was raised and I turned out normal. Well, if you count being a fan of 80s action movies normal.
