I wonder what happens, if, like many other consumers on the road these tires aren’t maintained at proper air pressure? Outside of Jalopnia I’ve seen people basically ignore air pressure in their tires, even after the TPMS starts to give them the little hourglass with treads warning.

Yep - came here to say this. Depending on running load and intent it will switch back and forth between port and direct. Even the 5.0L 2UR-GSE V8 engine in Lexus does that. Keeps the crud off the valves.
