This generation of Camry suffered some cost cutting measures over the last generation. Cheaper taillights, rear drum brakes instead of discs, etc. But I guess it’s still an OK car.

The problem with your argument is that auto assembly workers have specialized skills that are not readily transferable to other industries, and maybe not transferable to other auto manufacturers.  Without collective bargaining, the corporation gets the “lucky to have a job” attitude.
