Amen. Small block is the way to go. GM has always sucked at making diesels (until recently? I haven’t heard one way or another about new Duramaxs), go with the proven powerplant.

I was going to suggest a Tahoe or Yukon but they’re not exactly efficient. Decent for massive SUVs yes, but the diesel should do far better. The Durango looks great but again, will guzzle a lot more fuel as there is no diesel option.

In a world where half ton pickups can push $80k (sticker, at least here in Canada) this isn’t that outlandish. Not saying I’d ever buy one but it seems to fit all his criteria.

I hate recommending anything FCA...but a loaded Grand Cherokee Eco Diesel would probably do the trick. Big enough for the dude and dog, probably the most fuel efficient large practical vehicle you can get. Not too flashy but can be optioned nicely, the Summit trim level comes in around $60-70k.
