I liked it well enough, but lately I've been reading a few opinions criticising it for being a movie without sound instead of properly respecting the conventions of silent movies and truly adapting to the medium, I don't know what the staff here thought, but it's the kind of thing that can hold sway with critics.

Because I'm a rebel I'll only list the ones I've seen:

Really good list overall, even if as usual comedy gets the shaft, I'd hoped The Other Guys would get a nod (I had no hope for MacGruber but it would have been nice).
I also wish Le Havre or Love is Strange would have made it. I'm also curious about the Ceylan pick, not that I've seen either but I would have thought Once

Mysteries of Lisbon
Goodbye to Language
Holy Motors
Stories of Our Lives
The Duke of Burgundy
Hill of Freedom
Le Havre
The Wolf of Wall Street
A Touch of Sin
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
The Other Guys
Oki's Movie
Pina
Cosmopolis
Camille Redouble
Twixt
Our Sunhi
Exit Through The Gift Shop
Gone Girl
MacGruber

I'm lucky that I live in a big city, and I buy way too many DVDs. Lots of great stuff on youtube too.

I'm a proper film snob, I only watch the classics.

We'll see, but I think it's a mistake to assume gross or Oscars have any relevance in a critic's list (or how good films are in general).

They only have two movies so far this decade, I'm guessing ILD is in the top 20, I'll be surprised if True Grit makes it, it seems to have made very little waves.

True fans know that A Talking Pony!?! is where it's at.

I'm in the wrong country.

The Dissolve had Guardians of the Galaxy, The Avengers wasn't even on their list of the best blockbuster from a few months ago.

That's the main reason I haven't seen it yet, I'd have to buy the DVD, and I'm trying not to do that anymore.

It's the 2010 one yes, sorry if I'm not clear; the description of epic is about right, but it first appeared as a mini-series in Portugal, so there's nothing punishing about the length (it even has bathroom break built in).

But who among the readers will have seen as many movies as the reviewers? They're picking among all they've seen, that includes movies that made over a billion but also a bunch of movies whose combined budget is less than the advertising spend for The Avengers, I'm rather happy they are occasionally pushing things I'd

I still have to see Carlos and Tabu, I don't know exactly how they worked their order, but I wouldn't be surprised if the most interesting choices end up being outside the top 20 (which I imagine will be very close to the Dissolve's one).
That's why I'm perfectly ok with them doing a top 100, that's a lot more

You really should, it turned me into a Ruiz fanboy. It's endlessly exciting and thrilling, and while the running time is consequent it feels a lot shorter than it is.

Not a single non-English language film on your list, not that there aren't a lot of good movies on there; but for someone who seems rather curious you're missing out on a lot of great stuff.

So what?
Isn't the point of lists like this for people to discover great movies they might have missed?

That everything flowed and the movie didn't signpost every year jump was one of the few things I really liked about it, it kept a nice unbroken flow going.
And it was already long enough as it was, not too mention that without any stakes there would be little point coming back after one or two episodes.

The Dissolve's list was indeed very American (already when comparing the two best of 2014 lists), but there are a few ovies in here I would have expected higher on the list (and that were over there). We'll see how it goes, I guess I should just be happy that Mysteries of Lisbon is on there at all even if I was hoping
