Well, it's a cover. Originally done by ? & the Mysterians in 1967 (and then covered wonderfully by The Colourfield in 1985).

Okay - the original version (second video) has Dave Gahan, Martin Gore and Alan Wilder all singing live over an instrumental backing track (if you'll notice, the only cables on the floor belong to the microphones).
