My daughter will absolutely get the next rounds too. In fact, my husband thinks she got the second round already when he took her to the dr. last. It’s a good thing I’m not an anti-vaxxer because I’m not attentive enough to keep my kids from getting their shots.

After some bad experiences, I try to not interact too much with my kids’ friends’ parents. Today’s modern helicopter parent has trouble distinguishing between their kids’ friendships and their own adult friendships, so I just keep most folks at arms’ length. The woman is absolutely white and goes to our only local

Sounds like maybe then they could use their fancy algorithms to just make bodegas better (like, maybe, improving their inventory supply chain) instead of just jumping to “use analytics to ruin it for small business owners.”

Hah. She’s always pressuring me to be friendly to her friends’ parents and I’m like—it’s really better for everyone if I’m not.

I would vote it’s something else. My daughter (14) got the first last year, as did some of her friends, and recently told me that her best friends’ mom went on a rant in front of all the girls saying that the HPV vaccine will kill you and that it’s a conspiracy against Christians (?). Now my daughter is scared to get

Seven year olds do a lot of stupid shit though. Pathologizing it and turning it into a Life Lesson About Beauty is not necessary.

I didn’t hate White Teeth as much as I hated On Beauty. But after reading On Beauty and realizing how much she got wrong about American culture I started to wonder if White Teeth was just as bad, but I didn’t notice it because I’m not British.

I just feel sick that not one, but two women! chose to reproduce with that semi-sentient piss-puddle. And no, I can’t possibly sympathize with any of these collaborators. I’m glad that soul-less people like her are out of a job, and I hope more of them are unemployed in the months and years to come.

Thank you!

Are you involved in this group at all? I’m intrigued...I’ve been trying to do work to slowly move a small group of “NWLs” who are wanting to be allies but are 1. seriously lacking in perspective on their privilege and 2. not yet able to figure out how to divorce the performative aspects of “helping” with doing real

“I can’t read Deadspin without being assaulted with the evilness of my white, male, straightness, and it builds a sort of resentment that helps fuel this sort of thing.”

Ugh, that was so wrong. Pretty classic way to prove the point, though!

Oh I know. Her name is Mrs. Batman if you want to see it for yourself. At first I laughed but then just sort of marveled at all the points that must have been missed throughout her entire life experience.

I appreciate the context, thanks. These are the thought-holes I fall into when I’m supposed to be working.

I guess you’re less cynical than I. I saw that one commenter thanked her for covering Charlottesville (?) and she responded “no problemo” and it just seemed so flip. I don’t generally pay much attention to these things but I am so appalled by what is going on in our country and so ashamed that so many white people are

But you just did the same thing.

It seemed intentional to me. The Root authors have been amazing at calling out the shitty #notallwhitepeople fuckery that’s been happening on Jezebel all weekend. Apparently this author took that to mean that white people shouldn’t display their abhorrence of Charlottesville, which is a breathtakingly wrong take.

This little sentence by Whitney upset me. Seems to very much trivializing the very good and important Root article. Currently changing my go-to from Jez to the Root.

I mean, this is an American blog referring to things that are being done in America. I don’t think in this context it’s overly American-centric to be confused about a term that’s only recently been widely used in mainstream America and co-opted as a slur by the alt-right.

It’s confusing because it’s been tossed around as a general negative descriptor of left-wing activists by people who presumably would be against fascism, so when I (and I assume the OP) first encountered it we were not sure if we were perhaps missing something.
