I’d go for the Hail Mary: Manual ONLY. At least then you’ll know how people feel about manuals. Because if you sell both, the auto will be the choice 80%+ of the time. People will rationalize about “sitting in traffic” or whatever.

You’re correct that they’re an advance on a refundable tax credit (one that can be given to you as refund cash, not just one that reduces your tax burden). But it can’t be taken back when you file your taxes. In essence, it can only help you now and it can’t hurt you later.

None of our car seats have instructed us to use both LATCH and seat belt a the same time.  It’s either/or, plus the rear tether anchor in some cases.

The Latch system is limited to 65 lbs total weight (including 25lb car seat) so the child weight limit is 40lbs. The NHTSA recommends using a carseat up to age 7. Do you know how much a 5 or 6 year old weighs? Do the math, the LATCH system doesn’t work for the entire time a child should be in a carseat.

Depending on the weight of your child, LATCH alone isn’t sufficient for many forward-facing car seat installations. Using the seat belt is required to secure the car seat in those cases. At least, that’s been the case with the Chicco and Graco car seats we’ve owned over the last 7 years.
