I’m trying to think what kind of “maintenance” amounts to 13k in a single year. That has to be an outlier right, like you replaced a whole transmission or something? Paying 13k in maintenance every year seems like a lot.

This is BS. His take home was more like $40k. The mileage deduction is intended to cover his vehicle maintenance, fuel, car depreciation, etc. It shouldn’t be counted twice. Plus, his car was likely near worthless with well over 300k miles at the start of last year, so the depreciation is inflated.

Of all the scams ever pulled on the American people, linking cars to freedom has to be the biggest. Cars aren’t freedom. They’re expensive and the damage that having “Just Drive” as the default answer to every problem has caused so many more self perpetuating problems.
