Not true. There are lot more women directing in the indie world, but it's because they can scrape together smaller budgets on their own. The problem is getting Hollywood to trust them with "real" budgets. So in a sense female directors are ghettoized into the indie scene.

Women are often steered towards producing rather than direction. Phone calls, contracts and networking rather than artistic achievement. It's a problem across the board, but focusing on directors is a great way to talk about it since female points of view are being blocked by not having female directors. Less so in…
