This kind of abuse is rarely part of organised worship or rituals. Mostly the family has already been abusing or neglecting the child for some time and they only start accusing the child of being a witch or possessed because the abuse has led to emotional and behaviour problems like bedwetting.

Most cases of so-called witchcraft abuse occur in communities where learning disabilities are poorly understood, and in cultures where common childhood difficulties are heavily moralised, leading to a vicious cycle of abuse
