What if it was your mother, who died of a heart attack? Or your Aunt, who died of lupus? Or your nephew, who isn't dead, but is sick, and you want to perk him up/honor him?

No, it doesn’t have to be merely the political. I wish I had expanded my list of possibles to foreclose the flood of “But but but those are not exactly the same” replies.
How would they "quietly authorize" it? By simply saying nothing? Then where is the line drawn?
KNEEL BEFORE THE GINGER HAMMER, THRALL!
Okay, that’s better. You showed at least a bit of wit there, and it while it wasn’t directly responsive to what I wrote, it was least a playful take on it.
Interesting! What is the context?
Holy shit.
Very nicely played.
I think he did it again because the message he wants to send matters to him more than the $$. That’s his choice, and I respect it. The NFL has responded by fining his ass. That’s their choice, and I respect it.
You know, it would have been faster and easier for you if you had just typed “I have no answer.”
It folded because it was amateurish and bad. He Hate Me jerseys were but a symptom.
You apply for an exception on a case-by-case basis.
So names are okay, but not political sentiments? Do the people have to be NFL players? Do they have to be dead? I am interested in reading your new rule book, and will happily subscribe.
If the NFL wants to honor the dad, sure. But Deadspin is also banging on about a guy who wants to honor his dead mother who, I am fairly certain did not play for the NFL. I see why players want to do that. I also see why the NFL does not.
Fans mostly didn’t like it, IIRC, and if that happened all the time, could turn off sponsors as well as fans. It's a business first, not a memorial ground.
It isn’t shitty. The NFL is playing this one right. Players’ uniforms are not the place for personal expression. What if someone wants to wear “Black Lives Matter” on their eye black? Or “Impeach Obama?” Or “Jet fuel can’t melt steel” (do Super Bowl-losing coaches get to wear eye black)?
If you didn't say anything harmful, you're not doing Redddit right.
He was clearly trying to avoid the kid. Nice clickbait.
