I totally agree that Trump is an unqualified idiot. And I think if he had been running against a stronger Democratic candidate, there is no way he would have won (and Clinton is not a good candidate). But it’s important not to discount the fact that his message resonates.

I think that Trump’s supporters think he is an excellent explainer. If you watch his speeches, he does spend a good amount of time explaining complex ideas in simple terms. He might not explain things accurately, but he does explain things.

I’ve said many times that these bills play into legitimate fears—i.e. women’s and girls’ fear of sexual assault—but from a totally upside down patriarchal mythology. If you want to protect women and children from sexual abuse, there are lots of things you can do, these bills certainly aren’t it.

Over the holidays, I found out my cousin and cousin-in-law in Arizona voted Trump as a protest vote (they were Bernie supporters.) They had absolutely no expectation that Trump would win. My cousin literally said “I feel like one of the slack jawed Brexit idiots who didn’t think their vote mattered.”
