Arma 2's engine is really inefficient. My VERY modern rig sometimes struggles depending on the load. I can't see consoles handling anything close to that. Although having Day Z as a standalone would be nice.

while i can't fault your logic, nothing has been shown to say that the expansions will be for single player. BF3 works as a multiplayer game. Dice wouldn't waste time and money to make a singleplayer pack. It's just not their style.
