As much as I think the David Lynch version is virtually definitive (I kinda got bored at times reading the book) and don't necessarily like repeated trips to the same well, anyway, how does this qualify as a 'remake' and not a 'new adaptation?'

That's what makes the most sense. Of course, I was discussing with someone else that maybe I've just become wired (due to the Wire) to expect realism in TV, when the producers of the show aren't making certain choices for realistic reasons, but instead to move the story along. In other words, I could be looking at

Have you noticed how often characters in the midst of committing criminal acts handle objects with their bare hands? In some shows that would be a major plot point, but in others it's just a way not to get bogged down in half of the episode being about cleaning up the crime scene.
