Well FWIW, most shows were shot in 35mm until the advent of quality digital cameras in the Aughts. Sure, some shows were shot on Betamax (WKRP comes to mind). However, most shows were shot on film and then converted. So the idea is not terribly unusual.

I don't think so at all. I think if you were born in the 1970s the odds were your mother watched soaps, or whoever cared for you during the day. Mom watched One Life to Live and General Hospital. I remember when Elizabeth Taylor was on.
For the purposes of the dramatic narrative and themes, yes.
I just read this and it is a good, relaxing read without a lot of New Yorker sociological mumbo-jumbo or deconstruction.
