"Private luxury and public squalor" is the American way.

Adams is portrayed as that annoying guy who won’t stop playing acoustic guitar at parties

Kind of sad that you already thought rock and roll needed "saving" at that tender age…

You didn't know that exercise actually makes you unhealthy and a sedentary lifestyle is actually the key to good conditioning and feeling better overall?

My sister compiled a family cookbook from my mother and aunts years ago. Mom's recipe for bean soup ends with "turn heat to low and simmer away."

The Times Cooking app is a great resource, especially since they made it possible to save links from other websites along with ones from the Times. I'd never had a single place to save and organize online recipes before, and it's been a godsend.

My mother still has the ring-bound edition from when she got married in 1955.

Yeah, that was awfully glib. I mean, in my experience there is some truth to what he's saying ,in that I find regular exercise hugely helpful in managing my overall mood. But that doesn't mean I can just ditch my SSRI and sweat the anxiety away (which I tried to do for years before I finally started taking the SSRI).

I've been getting into Indian for the last couple of years: it's time-, labor-, and ingredient-intensive, but once you're prepared to make those investments, it's not especially difficult in terms of technique. I found Julie Sahni's "Classic Indian Cookery" helpful in getting started, but I especially recommend this

ATK is so much more watchable without Kimball's silly costume stunts and Pepperidge Farm schtick. Bridget and Julia were always the backbone of the show anyway, and now they can just do what they do best without having to feign interest in his blather.

I really enjoyed that show too. Ramsay is great when he isn't in screaming mode.

Jalapeños vary so widely in terms of heat that it's basically a crap shoot. Lately we only seem to get these enormous ones that aren't very hot, but occasionally an exception creeps in. Jacques Pépin says the only way to be sure is to taste a tiny smidgen before you add them to judge the heat.

Over the course of our two-week vacation in England last year, I think I had fish and chips 7 or 8 times. And it was fucking great, every goddamn time.

In the spirit of the conversation, I was going to mention that I found Paul Hollywood quite attractive, "in a silver daddy kinda way." Then I checked his entry on Wikipedia and discovered that he's two years younger than me.

It's "creme," actually. You wouldn't want to give anyone the idea that there's actually a naturally occurring substance in there.

this possibly clever prank about the president reading something

Just imagine the job Don Martin would have done.

When this show is over
It will start again
Will not be any different
Will be exactly the same
Kevin, Kevin is a place…

Special Dark is responsible for me thinking that I hated dark chocolate for the first 20 years of my life. And that's unforgivable.
