My parents taught me to shift through every gear when I learned how to drive a manual. Problem is, my car has 6 gears... I think it’s a practice that developed when 4 gears was standard, just in an attempt to minimize wear on the clutch and syncros that would be caused by shifting into a gear without matching revs.

Are you heavy-footed on the brakes? Engine braking doesn’t change the amount of traction available on the tires, so from a physics standpoint there’s not an advantage over careful application of the brakes.

Except that you have to downshift to a lower gear to get appreciable engine breaking..

I could see someone instinctively kicking their legs out for balance, and getting an instant amputation. There are little flaps to protect the legs, but they don’t go out that far.

But when leaving you have to accelerate up to a higher speed on an uneven surface with low traction, and merge into traffic. Somehow this sounds worse for everyone than stopping on a paved shoulder. Not to mention there’s the risk of getting stuck if the median is too rough.

Depends on the time of day. I drive the 495 loop fairly often before 6am, and the left lane is always moving well. Usually 75+ in a 55. I guess that’s when all the serious commuters are out who just want to get to work.

Hopefully it’s just bad acoustics in the video. It was filmed in a closed room with the camera just a few feet from the exhaust. I think the mic was just overloaded and unable to capture some of the delicious overtones.

Judging by this report in the video, clearly a 100cfm increase in airflow results in a 100hp increase. Clearly.

We had this bridge on our route that had a really big bump. The regular driver would go slow over it, but whenever we had a sub, they had no idea and would fly over it. Liftoff! People in the back could easily touch the ceiling. Even at my seat just behind the wheel I would get a good 1ft off the seat.
