Well said. If we’re going to have democratized platforms like social media, YouTube, blogs, etc... then there are going to be people who say dumb shit on them. It’s just how it works. The only other option is incessant gatekeeping, which presents an entire universe of other problems, ones of equal significance.
Does anyone remember the series of weird radio ads involving Tanya Roberts from the mid-2000's that were done as fake interviews? I wanna say it was for a Las Vegas time share or something. But basically the host of whatever radio show would read the ad as an interview where they started out “So I was watching the…
I caught about 15 minutes of this and it was so full of itself I couldn’t stand it. It came off as a two-hour comedic equivalent of the ‘celebrities sing “Imagine” video.
wait a minute - modern day Simpsons episodes have jokes???
Yeah, most of the interactions boiled down to:
Fun fact: ‘Marge Be Not Proud’ was the first Simpsons Christmas episode since the very first episode, ‘Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire’ - SEVEN seasons later! By contrast, the most recent season had not one but TWO Christmas episodes - the second of which aired in May.
The ‘promotional value’ thing can change over time - just look at radio.
I’m not a lawyer or anything (I did take a couple of media classes in college) but I don’t think it meets the bar for fair use. A play script, for example, is still copyrighted even if different actors are performing it in different ways. MST3K needs to secure rights to the movies they spoof. Again - not a lawyer, but…
The difference here is that these streamers also act as adverts for these publishers’ videogames, down to the absolutely awful games. These companies pay big bucks to these streamers to play their games sometimes, so publishers stand to gain a lot more than they lose.
Zero chance Trump knew it was fake when he retweeted it, and at best a 5% chance he knows now
Babylon Bee was decently funny when it actually WAS a Christian Onion knockoff that spoofed evangelical Christianity. Somewhere along the line it veered off into conservative politics and now it’s all just tired ‘aren’t liberals stupid?’ shtick for Rush Limbaugh listeners.
That said, ‘Trump Shows Off Completed AWANA…
What I love about the story of SMB2 is that it’s something you just couldn’t pull off today. Reskinning a different game and calling it a sequel? Not just a sequel, but a sequel to friggin Super Mario Bros? To THE definitive game of the NES era? In the internet era, you could never get away with that. Everyone would…
It sent ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to #2 on the Billboard charts nearly two decades later! Hell, I’d argue that this scene is why ‘Rhapsody’ holds its modern-day status as possibly the most beloved rock song of all time.
In fact, it probably stole that crown from ‘Stairway to Heaven’ - which Wayne’s World also makes fun of.
The Beetljuice ‘Day-O’ scene is one of my favorite moments in all of cinema, and my favorite ‘micro-genre’ of movie scene - people involuntarily dancing. (See also: the Floor Show from Rocky Horror Picture Show)

I have very fond memories of my dad coming home from work with 5-inch floppy disks of 30+ shareware DOS games he’d picked up from computer trade shows. The labels would be handwritten in marker and the disk might have 2-3 duplicates of the same game under different names. Soooo many hours invested in those trash games…
I remember this happening with a late 90's game called ‘Death Race’ (top-down racing game where you outfit your car with weapons). We played the freeware version, with the first three tracks and first three cars, obsessively in college. By the time one of us got our hands on the full version, the new tracks seemed…
Not to sound like I’m giving credit to Republicans or anything but... is anyone actually coming for IUDs? Certainly there’s reason to be concerned about abortion access (while I think overturning Roe v. Wade is unlikely, the SC could well turn abortion into essentially a state-level issue) but I don’t think even the…
(In its suit, the band argued that it has been using Lady A as a nickname for years, even though it only ever seemed to pop up in situations where people couldn’t be bothered to write out the full name.)
