Normal car doors don’t shield the interior if it’s coming from the angle that the door is opened to either. Also most car doors have the floor wider than the roof, so it’s not like that’s completely shielded.

Also the purpose isn’t to prevent evaporation, that’s a side-effect. The main point is to prevent UV damage, which effects all the water for all residents served by these resevoirs, which is going to be far more than 8100 people.
