There is a case to be made that the hero worship element of football culture played a part in his attitude that the girl was there for the taking. Redemption is one thing, but putting him back in the same culture is another. People have good, meaningful lives without playing football.

I didn’t realize the school’s part in asking him to play. I assumed he was bouncing around until he found a place he could walk on.

The issue isn’t whether he should be allowed to play or not (he shouldn’t). The issue is that the school asked him to play, let him make the team, then caught heat and kicked him off for something they knew he did already. That is pretty fucked up. They should have never let him on in the first place.

Then why write the original explaination as “too drunk to give consent”. While technically correct, this phrase spans the spectrum of unconscious to awake and vigorously saying yes, but also underage and drunk (as any amount of drunk teen would make them too drunk to consent).
