I won’t disagree with that, but we know that would put them out of business.

Partly agree. I’m fine with her choosing to live there if she likes, and I think the city is being a bit unreasonable about that.
Airbnb could, and should, refuse to list properties that haven’t submitted inspections showing no code violations. I’m pretty surprised to find that they’re not doing this already. Seems like they’re creating a liability for themselves.
Exactly, we can’t have people building whatever they want without it being inspected and brought up to code. The way some people talk about this, they sound like they want to go back to the bad old days when shitshacks were allowed.
I get the impression that is what she is doing. It isn’t a tree house like your really lucky friend had in grade school. It is a house that surrounds a tree. I think the issue is that it isn’t up to code and she is renting it out. Of course, it probably just started because someone thought she was bringing down the…

I was in Florida a few weeks ago and the utter lack of zoning made my northeastern liberal heart palpatate.
She has an aversion to opening windows!
Yeah, I’m conflicted too. I think whenever you build or remodel without permits, you know there’s risk involved and you might have to tear it all down. This isn’t just some kid’s treehouse that they occasionally play in, she’s living in it and charging other people money to live in it. When it is a residence, it…
Look, planning laws exist for a reason. If you don’t like the code, work to change it. Don’t build in defiance of it. You’re only going to lose.
The linked article answers some of these questions. In particular:
it’s cool and all, but i personally, am for building regulations and enforcing them. renting a non-code compliant space out on airbnb doesnt sit well with me.
I’m sympathetic, but the building code is really important (not being sarcastic) especially in hurricane-prone FL. The fact that this has stood for a while doesn’t mean anything, really.
Enough with the millennial hate, it looks bad on everyone.
Same. I even copied:
Ahem, that’s nice, but *I* will be voting for substance.
I will NEVER vote for a candidate so unreliable!
Jesus, you scared me for a minute there.
