The Archer C7 already has an impressive feature set without a custom firmware. I think the Wirecutter review was based on this fact.

ASUS uses a heavily modified version of Tomato on their routers. It would probably be difficult for them to completely block custom firmware unless they re-wrote the entire codebase for their routers’ firmware.
