while I agree that The Duke of Burgundy deserves a lot of awards, I can't call it a lesbian movie. It takes place in an artificial world in which there's only one gender, so sexual orientation in the conventional sense doesn't exist.

After Dark is one of my favorite Murakami books. It feels like a writing excercise, but in a good way.

Were you the one here talking about the Scandinavian tv show The Bridge? If so, what are your thoughts on the third season? I thought it was a bit strong the second one. Especially the cinematography grabbed my interest, and Sofia Helin was obviously great. Again a downer ending to season of course, but all in all I

I couldn't even finish the first volume of 1Q84, but I loved Tsukuru Tazaki. It starts a bit rough, but then becomes really moving, I thought.

Carol is the best thing ever. Of course it's superbly directed, acted and shot, but it's so much more. Every little moment is electrifying and tense, every tiny gesture had me trembling in my seat (top moment: Carol gently touches Therese's shoulder, and she shivers, ugh so powerful. But everything else too). Love

Totally! Although also heartbreaking…

One of 2015's best, no doubt. I was mainly surprised how hysterically funny it actually was when I actually watched it: it's promotional materials suggest something much more… I don't know… arty? Serious? Of course it's also just really visually beautiful, touching and well-acted.

I agree. In general, Strickland's use of sound in the film almost reaches Lynchian heights, especially in the film's surreal parts; that moth scene is glorious.

Yes, it's the first. I get what you're saying, and I'll definitely see his other films. Still, I liked ITMFL a lot anyway, but I'm sure it rewards repeated viewings.

We'll see about the Mubi thing. The idea sounds appealing: the selection is curated, so there's a guarantee every movie that is thrown at you at least has some merit and when I initially checked its current line-up there was a nice mix of well-known classics and lesser known recent films. Also, the limited selection

I got a Mubi subscription, and immediately used it to watch In the Mood for Love and The Company.

Bron/Broen is so great. Love love Sofia Helin. I'm gonna get the s3 DVD for Christmas (well, I'm giving it to my mom, but we'll watch it together anyway). Very happy to hear it's still good.

He was also in Inland Empire, though

And Rectify

I started watching it some time ago. I hope it can fill the Rectify-shaped hole in my heart.

Netflix has the right one

when talking about Schoenaerts, The Drop should definitely mentioned, which covers similar ground as Bullhead, but with much better writing.

Oh, also been reading Kenzaburō Ōe's A Personal Matter (been meaning to get into his work, having already read some short stories of his). Not that many thoughts yet, only that it is quite overwhelming.

Only major pop culture this week has been finishing season 3 of Rectify. To reiterate the most common comment in its tv club comment sections: This Fucking Show. That finale was funny and touching and weird and beautiful and just perfect. No big unexpected twists, but these have never happened in Rectify anyway, so in

I really hope she has something to do other than being naked. She was amazing in Killer Joe, channeling Badlands Sissy Spacek, but otherwise her filmography looks rather poor.
