My understanding has always been that a car with a “dead” battery can be push started because the starter motor draws WAY more current than the spark plugs. A “dead” battery often has enough in it to run the plugs but not the starter motor. You roll the car to turn the engine over, not to charge the battery.

It’s sort of like it’s vomiting itself up.
