I think that one of the issues was it didn’t really seem to have any reason to be set in the 80s. Other than the director being Gen X, wanting to include 80s fashions, and the popularity of Stranger Things at the time. If they’re going to set it during any point during the Cold War, then at least give it an old school…

There was no need for it, and no justification for it. Audiences certainly noticed how problematic that whole storyline was, while the entire cast and crew appear to have been oblivious.
