It’s a straw man argument. The issue of racism and police brutality are too uncomfortable for them to address, so they instead play the victim and play the whole lot off as “unpatriotic”.

Yup. Won’t be a popular opinion, but it follows the letter of the rule. I wouldn’t have blamed them for letting the call stand, but I’m actually impressed that for such an unusual circumstance, they got all the technicalities right. If you want to argue interpretation, go right on ahead but the implication was correct.
