More than that, people disagreed with the theme. If you disagree morally with the theme of a film, you won't like it, beyond an intellectual appreciation for the filmmaking (when applicable).

The loss of inimitable Crispin Glover, for this and the third film, was a terrible blow to the films' overall success. Terrible, terrible mistake to not include him.
