Canary is actually the most stable browser I have ever had. It is honestly more stable than my Chrome stable build and way faster.

I simply don't buy any paid apps. I have no credit cards attached to my account and if I really need to get a paid app I wait till it's free using Appshopper or buy a gift card (which hasn't happened yet). There is almost always a free alternative with the same functionality by another dev or by the same dev with ads.

If you are part of the computer department or possibly business department in a university you might be able to get free software from MSDN Academic Alliance. I got Windows 7 and Windows Vista from there, and they have many versions of XP.
