I just did the dreaded timing belt service on on S4 engine that I’m swapping into my Allroad.

Awesome. The ONLY real problem with the 100 series is how few they made/sold here. :)
If you’re going to live with rotten fuel economy, you should be getting something for your gas dollar. A 100 series LC or LX isn’t much more expensive, and it’s a LOT nicer than “consumer grade” SUVs like the Sequoia (if somewhat smaller). I love mine so, so much.
“The engine is in the correct place for ease of driving and working on.”
It may not be gimmicky, but it hasn’t been on the market nearly long enough to know if it’s “robust” or not. Let’s see how many survive 100K miles of thrashing.
I like how most of the comments here are accusing the guy of poor counter-steering instead of questioning the fact that people are lining a public street to watch a bunch of rich guys show off in 400+ horsepower cars.
5.6 may be a ladder at your gym, but at the Gunks...
Pretty much. Just picked up my second eleventybazilliondollar cruiser, and I’m old enough to remember it being derided when new as being too expensive and soft. Hah. Besides legit rock crawling and deep mud, I can’t think of anything that’d give it much trouble. For hauling tons gear and kids over rough ground to go…
The CR-Z is a a bit of a snooze fest. The Fit is awesome, though. I’ve not spent much time in the current generation, but my second generation fit is hilarious fun. On the same suspension mods as my Miata (mild springs, sway bars, tires, brake pads), I run similar lap times in spite of the worse power to weight…
This is true. There’s a pretty big distinction to be made between the world of “overlanding” and getting on rocks. My 100-series Land Cruiser is the ultimate overlander, but NOT the tool for crawling through boulder fields. Hard to say from videos, but I doubt I’d be thrilled to be be on that particular trail without…
ITT: People who don’t understand what understeer is or why it happens.
“The iPhone 7's camera can now take DSLR-quality photos thanks to all of the new components jammed into the phone.”
And hell, there aren’t a lot of turbo 4's that can match a chipped Audi 20v I5 turbo even today. They were happy to push 300hp for 200K miles. My dad’s ‘91 200TQ had 220K miles on it when he sold it. Original turbo, engine never opened up, original clutch/trans/diffs, had been running extra boost its whole life. Audi…
The second owner will abuse it properly, hopefully. I know I’ve beaten the shit out of my LX470 and enjoyed every minute.
You’re just butthurt that you had to spend $30 on an e-torx set.
Playing devil’s advocate here, since I’ve had 5 BMWs with over 160K on them and never had a problem because I know how to do preventative maintenance, but you can get an E39 540i for $3K BECAUSE IT IS A MONUMENTAL PILE OF HEARTACHE. If it were as reliable as a Lexus, it wouldn’t cost $3K.
If you think that makes any difference with modern engine control systems...
Then you should refuse to install those brakes, or bed them in on a track. Same goes for the customer complaining about driveline vibration at 130 mph.
> But manufacturers cannot be held liable for the actions of the people they sell their products to.
Totally agree!
