The writers are trying too hard to make characters more parallel or polar opposites to others (other than the fact most of the cast are all playing family members):
-Fiona doesn't go with Jimmy/Steve; Ian goes with Mickey.
-Frank is a drunk with a "brilliant mind"; Lip is a brilliant mind who drinks.

I couldn't help but chuckle when the lead FBI agent was interrogating Darlene through USA Network references, and he ends his tangent by saying "Characters like you aren't welcome" #CorporateUnbranding
The one thing that stood out to me from the pilot, and has been on my mind since the series started, is the references to hands. When Alfred asked Earn where the root of the word "manage" came from, Earn bookishly explains it came from the Latin word "manus" which means hand.
