Sounds like he needs a hybrid of some sort. There’s several 2019 used Honda Insights under $20k that will take a load off of the gas and maintenance for the long commute and they’re just as fun to drive as a Civic.

The Escape Hybrid is true mechanical AWD and gets nearly 40 mpg. Not sure if the Badlands version will get a hybrid but it is just a rear diff upgrade and software over the standard Bronco Sport. It might be a little less efficient than 40 mpg, but it should still take some sales away from people looking at a higher

Glad it’s not just me. You’re spot on that this looks like the true evolution of the 1st and 2nd gen Escape. It was always obvious that the 3rd and 4th gens were a different philosophy as they are just rebadged Kugas.

They also couldn’t have the seats lower because there’s supposedly a hybrid model in the pipeline and the batteries will most certainly be under the rear seats

I always wondered if they could justify it by strictly bringing over the hot versions. Focus STs could get well into the $30k range and while a young person might not be able to justify a Mustang or Camaro as an only car, a hot hatch is easy to live with.

I wonder if the Golf has some mechanical changes that justify the price difference. Perhaps standard torque vectoring and adaptive dampers that would be options on the S3.

You’d think it would have been cheaper though to just build one type of Passat even if they sell in the states at a lower price point, VW’s decision making in the states has always been baffling
