That is a #whataboutism response tho. We as a nation should rightly be disgusted and demand a timeout and reset before we send our summer team anywhere. It is literally a child sex scandal all in the pursuit of gold and ratings/ratings money.

Same reason other countries are banned. We’re no different and when we cheat - literally using young girls for sex, we are a disgrace and need a freaking timeout.
This whole thing is grotesque, and doubly grotesque in how utterly unsurprising it is.
I was just thinking that as well. Russia was banned from the winter for state sponsored doping. Covering up years of child sex abuse seems to heavily justify a ban. I’m an American and I LOVE the Olympics, but banning us from the next summer Olympics is 100% justified.
I agree with the sentiment, but I’d be stunned if there weren’t stories from every (or nearly every) country’s Olympic programs.
That was cheating...very dishonest. Pedophilia is much more wholesome...
The rare rideshare pun. Good job.
I’m going to get buried down here in the greys, but piece was almost 9,000 words and it didn’t even link everything I could think of off the top of my head.
I always suspected there was something creepy the way the coaches always made the athletes go around all the time wearing nothing but swimsuits.
Read elsewhere and agreed and now agree even more: the US should be banned from the next summer olympics.
So maybe let’s stop covering the olympics so proudly?
How convenient that a report that just comes out now has as it’s core bad guy ... someone who has the decency to go and already be dead.
Not that they should have survived the Nassar backlash anyways, but the USOC board needs to resign now.
It crosses sports and national boundaries too. Britain is in the middle of a terrible scandal right now with a former youth soccer coach. It started with this mortifying disclosure from a now-retired pro (details like: after years of abuse, the coach started dating the player’s older sister and came over to the…
The latter. Think about it. Two of the 3 sports in which the most intimate areas of an athlete’s body are “emphasized” are gymnastics and swimming. The next shoe to drop will be the third: track & field.
Do any of these people like the sports they coach, or are these things just some sort of weird fetish cult thing?
Tear down the whole US olympic structure and start again. This is way worse than blood doping or whatever fuckery the Russians were up to that got them banned.
“Same country that puts money ahead of the lives of its children also puts money ahead of the behavior of lecherous individuals preying on children.”
What next? There’s no way any US Olympic team gets through this unscathed, is there? This sort of thing is systemic, clearly crosses sports, and the number of people who are, and should continue to be, getting busted for this is staggering.
