Interesting, are they the Mystery Science Theater Hour edits, and if so, do they have the Jack Perkins bumpers?

Whaaaat?! Guess it’s time to check my OTA channels. I’m somewhat perfectly situated against North Table Mountain so as two screw up my chances of getting almost anything, but this is very exciting.

Also, why do casually racist old men think that “chi” == “shi” in Japanese. My casually racist asshole grandpa, who spent literal years in Japan when he was in the military, said it in the exact same, head clutchingly awful way.

Wow, lotta folks don’t know their classical music I guess.

Oof, I miss the old physical rewards. Our selection was paltry compared to Japan’s, but still, there were some really nice things available in the really early days.

I am one of the folks who got the full game, and no gif has made me want to drop everything and play a game more than this gif.

Now playing

I’m sure this means we’re terrible parents, but the week my kid was born my partner and I watched this and, contrary to what we were told about how we might react to any media involving children post-parenthood, we laughed our asses off:

Oh dang! I kicked off the download this afternoon via browser, really hoping that actually worked and I have a nice surprise waiting when I finish work.

Or, to the extent that there is a perceptual reaction, it’s pretty much the same as if you were watching any violent or exciting thing. At least that’s my very hazy recollection of the research my partner did in talking on this subject.

Current research does not bear this out as far as I know, and at worst it has as much of an effect as watching any violent or exciting media (like, say, a cartoon). I’ll have to bug my partner for their sources, but here is my partner’s radically condensed take regarding the historical moral panic over videogames and

Holy heck yes. _That_ would be impressive and... probably doable? I watched a couple videos about nipkow sets last year and the ingenuity on display to come up with mechanical broadcast TVs is mind blowing.

Man it makes my blood boil when someone “paging /r/iamverysmart”s me but holy shit, you’re really gunning for the top of that sub, huh?

Shit, I don’t even think characterizing it that way clicks for me. The normalization and, dare I say it, deification of nazis in a public forum is what sticks in my craw. I saw bits and pieces of that documentary about the fellow who befriends members of the KKK and slowly persuades them to come to the other side.

The commentary when Japan came out was comically awful. I’m paraphrasing here, but they basically said “This is a tense moment because Japan occupied Korea, but you know, they really have to hand it to the Japanese for facilitating their technological revolution.”

Not sure if a comment is the best way to leave this note, but the 6th paragraph is missing a space between “hype” and “the”.

Added a comment as a response to another comment instead of the article. Nothing to see here.

Yes yes to Hyperdia. It’s kind of miserable to use, but it is absolutely essential if you have a JR Pass for planning and booking shinkansen trips. Before you get your tickets, plan your first picks on trains and times in Hyperdia and write down the info about the routes you wanna take OR just bring Hyperdia, call up

Wow, this is a really unfortunate nightmare from a preservation standpoint. What a bummer.
