If one is particularly stressed, it can help to have something to focus on to calm the breathing. Just like giving somebody a paper bag to breathe into when they are panicking. They focus on the bag, not the panic.
To be fair, once they put the little finger indentation on the button it became usable, and I actually used one for a couple of years. But honestly, it's a devastatingly bad design.
