True. We have no idea what malfunctioned in this case. That's why I hedged and said, "does not appear to have." It's also possible that they could get one or two gear down but not all three, and chose a belly landing over an asymmetrical one.
I'm somewhat surprised that the 767 does not appear to have the ability to gravity-drop the gear. The A-380 does.
