Apologizing BEFORE he was outted (excuse the pun) would have been a good start. Apologizing because you got caught will never come off as sincere.

Even if you don’t care about what he did, everybody in the room is aware of it and yelling “We came for a show, whip it out and start pounding!” is guaranteed to be a bigger laugh than anything in his set.
