Yeah, I agree that it’s his responsibility, because he should have noticed (and it sounds like he did, and just said meh). Do we know that he’s the person that chose the centerpieces? I seriously doubt that decor falls under the college president’s list of responsibilities. He’s in charge, so the buck ultimately stops with him, but I think it was probably someone else who chose the racist centerpieces and planned the menu.

But how would you know how to give equal pay at a non-combined event? Just pick one of the multiple men’s tournaments scheduled for the same week and match that one?
