Yeah, from what I can tell, this is his opinion from a biological perspective. i.e. 2nd cousins can have kids without severely fucking their offspring up.

Give he is the son of Turkish immigrants, I’d say even if he didn’t there is a good chance he’s related to some cousins that got married. It’s actually fairly common in the Middle East, as well as a lot of central and South East Asia. It goes along with arranged marriages.

He’s not wrong biologically speaking, which is why 2nd cousins can legally marry in all 50 states. At that level, problematic recessive traits getting excessively reinforced typically only become a problem over several generations in a small population (a very small town, or perhaps early-modern European royalty)…

Look, I’m not into any of my first cousins, or any second cousins that I’ve met. I couldn’t even date a childhood friend. But I’m pretty sure what he’s saying is true. There is so much else to criticize about him.

Marriage with distant cousins is pretty common in many cultures, historically and today. Among my own ethnic group in the 1960s, the modal married couple was like third cousins.
