Anything addictive is fun....? I know tons of smokers who hate that they smoke, I think they would disagree with you. I'm sure they can just quit whenever they feel like it.

They didn't have it backwards at all. I work for a game company, and have studied game design- mechanics of some games are built specifically to keep you playing by doing things like balancing and timing rewards in ways that compel you to continue. There are games that make you keep playing because you'll feel bad…
+1 for specific platforms becoming irrelevant.
I'm not sure that the fallacy applied to this case. The fallacy claims that the previous purchase (the apps) don't weigh into the decision, but they clearly do. If I didn't like the iPhone or the apps I've already paid for then you'd be right, but this is not the case.
I tried the same with my girlfriend- she's gone through three different phones in the last year and I get her to try different kinds of phones each time (as opposed to allowing my current Apple bias influence her choice), including two Windows phones, but she got annoyed and frustrated with everything but the iPhone. …
A big thing that hasn't been addressed is the money invested in accessories, apps or games on their original phone/platform of choice.
I think this whole article, and a lot of the commenters are missing the point that was being made. Hulst didn't say that more polygons = deeper characters. What he DID say, as far as I understood it, was that better specs means less constraints involved in expressing the deepness that already exists in a well…
On one hand, I partly agree with you, as far as feeling like devs and gamers are not inherently racist, and I think it would be a step back to need a "black games" and "white games" section-
People would have no issue playing a game with a gay lead if the game didn't make a point of it.
I can understand why a game like this would fail. It's too... vague. Unless my understanding of it is wrong, I just see a big deathmatch with a deep character editor.
Holy ads batman. Can't get the whole article/video for x number of seconds of advertising....? I'm all for using ads on the web, but there's a point where they get to be too invasive.
I honestly think that there's tons of potential for competitive entertainment software on television, but I think the biggest failing so far is trying to associate with sports. Video games are not and never will be sports. They so not share a common audience. Of course sports networks don't want games- games are…
It's interesting how indies are in a unique situation where they're both more and less constrained at the same time. They have less resources, man power, money, etc., but they have more creative freedom and such. I enjoy a lot of indie games for this reason- to a point though. I've played enough 2d platformers and…
You're certainly not wrong. It really would be hard to come up with something that doesn't have any recycled elements to it, maybe close to impossible, but I'm all for trying.
I see what you mean in terms of comparing games to fashion trends. "Retro" graphics are a great example of a visual fad right now.
I see a bit of irony in what you said.
To be honest, for a lot of people it would lose said bonus points for that reason. I can appreciate that there are a lot of people who like the whole 'anime' style, and I enjoyed it when I was younger, but honestly it's too much now.
I think I can live with the next-gen improvements slowing down, or maybe taking another direction. I say this from the point of view of not wanting to have to buy another computer or console to continue playing currently-released games.
Honestly, I gladly welcome incentives to actually buy a game. Why? Because piracy. Because if you don't convince anyone that their money is well spent, they wont spend the money, but will still want to play the game.
