Right and I knew absolutely no men of Asimov’s generation. oh wait, I did know plenty of men in that generation who, despite the historical and social context, managed to not grope women.

You’re 65 in the year 2016, which means that you were still a young adult during the Second Wave of feminism. I’m offering historical and social context for Asimov’s behavior, not moral endorsement.

I was a young female in the 60s. Let me tell you, gropers were creeps back then just as they are now. Good guys did not grope women, assholes did.

This is a delicate point, but it’s worth noting that Asimov was already aged in his 50s by the time the Women’s Liberation movement started to gain real cultural currency.

As someone who was female in the 60s and also familiar with shitty sexist behavior at that time, I’m here to tell you that this excuse cuts no ice. It wasn’t like people had just discovered fire back then and were still drawing on cave walls. There was a rising consciousness, and people were being called out for this

This is speculation on my part, but I wonder how much connection there is between sexual harassment at cons and the “disenfranchising” we also see at cons, the claims that some people are not “true fans,” because they’re not geeks, because they’re not knowledgeable enough, because they’re not male or white or

I have an acquaintance who, when she was an 11-year old, met Asimov. He pinched her. She punched him.

Re the new Ghostbusters : I don’t think I’ve seen a film so handily ace the Bechdel Test since Fried Green Tomatoes. Mad Max: Fury Road does pass, though.

I know, right? So what if it is “pandering” to women. The movies have been pandering to any guy who will pay them for decades.

I’m so stoked about Star Trek, but damn if I don’t want to see Ghostbusters more because ladies! Action! PANDERING TO ME, FINALLY!!

Because then it wouldn’t be about her and her brave stand for tribal cultures!
