It should get bounced. I think plaintiff’s attorney might be an opportunist more than a tactician

Subway doesn’t owe a duty to an employee’s wife. MAYBE in the case of occupational exposures, but that’s about it. I’m not sure why people are advocating that employers get more involved in the private lives of employees, which is behavior that this suit effectively encourages.

Tipping is an incredibly shitty practice and a way to keep costs down. It’s not something that happens outside of North America. Expecting businesses to pay their employees a livable wage does not make me “trashy”. Furthermore the cleaning staff are not service staff, they shouldn’t have to be tipped even if you

How/why is it my responsibility as the client to make sure staff is paid properly?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA (takes a breath) HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Is this article satire? Maybe a troll article? Oh wait you’re serious?
I’m supposed to tip them? Never heard of that. And I travel often. Sounds more like staff just trying to make you feel guilty that they don’t make a lot. Sorry but you can always find another job. Or

You should see what happens in an ER. The support staff have to clean rooms in a heartbeat that may be dirtied by all types of bodily fluid. These individuals are overworked and still get low pay... Where are their tips? Isn’t that almost the same concept as hotel housekeeping... Realistically, grunt work gets paid

No, I am not buying into your damn tipping culture. It’s already a pain in the ass with waiters, but garbage men and baristas and mailmen. How about you do your fucking job and stop whining about tips from me. Want something to complain about? Complain to your boss about not having a damn living wage.

It’s not about that. It’s about the fact that you are now expected to tip for every goddamn thing. There is a reason why no other country in the world does tipping like US does. It’s absurd to tip a person for doing their job.

One thing I don’t understand is tipping at a Starbucks or whatever your regional variant is (it’s Caribou Coffee here in Minnesota).

Thank you for this article. My eldest daughter was diagnosed with Aspergers while at school, and although she’s now well into her 30s, the only job she has ever been able to hold down is as a chambermaid.

Let me just re-write this whole article for you.
$0.
That is how much you should tip someone for doing their job. If I’m paying $300+ a night i don’t expect the fucking housekeeping to be underpaid.

Rae is right about tipping nightly but like you I rarely have the cash plus I’m not a morning person, am usually jet lagged and simply forget in my rush out the door each morning but remember when packing up to leave and then it’s easier to leave larger bills.

None of mine or my husband’s employers would reimburse us, so we do not do this. Sometimes they don’t even pay for decent rooms, and most have stopped paying for meals and such. Sometimes they complain about how much expense money they pay out, even when they wrote the schedule.

Sorry, but fuck that. If we keep on tipping people for doing their jobs, soon we will have to tip sales people, fast food, even a goddamn toll road attendant.

Keep in mind that in the Western world, this is a problem that’s fairly exclusive to the USA, staff in Europe are paid a living wage. If you tip in the EU it’s a courtesy for a job well done, rather than a necessity for the staff to have a half-decent wage.

you should tip zero. Tipping is wrong, encourages businesses to pay people less. If you tip to one person, you should tip everyone. Serving tables or cleaning rooms is not more or less of a profession than, say working at a call center or babysitting your child. You either tip everyone or you don’t tip anyway. UNLESS

Agreed! I travel frequently and leave a tidy room, but I’d still expect the sheets and towels changed, although she does mention that. I’d also expect the toilet, sink and shower should be cleaned at minimum. Having said that, who the hell knows what they actually clean/change!

This is my problem. Instead of expecting guests to help your people make a living wage, how about you pay them a living wage? Raise the room rate by $3 a day and give it all to housekeeping and then we won’t have to make up for your shitty business practices.

I always decline any service when I stay at a hotel because I’m usually locked in my room working and don’t want to be disturbed. I’m also very neat and take out my own trash. So my rule of thumb is to leave about $1 per night, which fits with the category of establishment I normally stay at. Like you, if stay

Yes. If someone is killed by the cops you rally around their family members because they are grieving, you don’t need to do a background check before expressing compassion for someone in pain.
