It’s not ever “East LA” which is a distinct unincorporated area east of downtown, it is however, along with Los Feliz and Echo Park, often called “eastside” to the consternation of (mostly Latino) residents of the hoods further east. Geographically correct in that LA extends all the way to Canoga Park in the Valley

Lol @ elite. I know where this preschool is located. It’s right by that middle school Thomas Starr King and Gelson’s. I live right by there (in the Los Feliz neighborhood) and did not realize the neighborhood was considered “ultra hip.” Silverlake, East Hollywood, and Los Feliz are going through major homeless people

Fascinating article, but Silverlake is not the Eastside of LA. It is not east of the river or downtown. It is central Los Angeles, more north central actually. (Had to get that off my chest because gentrification tries to make LA smaller than it is to cut out the “less appealing” parts.)

It’s funny how perceptions of eastside and westside change so much depending on where you live in the area. Growing up in Echo Park, anything west of La Brea was “westside”. Living in West L.A. now (the actual neighborhood called “West L.A”), seems people around me consider everything east of Western to be East L.A.

Yes, what is the “eastside” is up for debate, but what East L.A. is not. East Los Angeles, is a specific location with define borders, and no other place in LA is East LA, not even Boyle Heights, and definitely not Silver Lake.

Because gentrifiers and newcomers to the city generally don’t venture east of downtown L.A., across the L.A. river, so never learn that there are whole neighborhoods and communities - even a university! - on that side. So they assume that they must be in East L.A. when they’re in Silver Lake or Echo Park, or go to a

It is indeed a sensitive topic, and I’m guilty of feeding into it. SILVER LAKE IS NOT EAST L.A. DAMMIT! I even don’t like these residents’ use of the term “Eastside”. The Eastside is Boyle Heights, El Sereno, City Terrace, etc. But it’s a losing battle. Millions of Angelenos continue to think the City’s eastern border

Lex Steppling’s mistake was asking an Australian to be thoughtful about a native cultural issue.

So, I’m stuck in the grays and no one will ever see this, but: I have some real problems with this article. The tone is oddly sensationalizing and it focuses on a lot of random and unimportant deatils in a way that seems pearl-clutching and even, at times, strangely un-feminist for Jezebel.

Also, apologies in advance for this very LA quibble, but what is East LA and what is the east side is a very touchy subject at the moment.

Just a minor correction: “Nestled in the foothills of East L.A., the predominantly Latino neighborhood absorbed an influx of Los Angeles’s gay leather subculture and became home to gang injunctions, prostitution stings, and really excellent heroin.”

Time after time, it has been proven that a) childcare/preschool cannot be for profit, b) the person in charge must be a fully qualified Early Childhood Educator. Would you allow your child to attend an elementary school where the principle has no classroom experience, no training in education, but a master’s degree in
